		<description>Good article -- I admit to being a bit of a footnote fetishist as well; I know that near the end of his life, DFW was trying to break his addiction to footnotes, and I&#039;ve tried to as well (though for different reasons; my main reason is not being seen as a DFW-ripoff artist[1]), but... he&#039;s right, they&#039;re damned addictive.  It&#039;s a great structure for the parenthetical references and digressions that come up in modern speech -- but in an elegant way that doesn&#039;t make it so the speaker loses the plot (as happens so often in those sorts of verbal footnotes).  

DFW&#039;s death was a huge loss.  So sad.


[1] Which, is, admittedly, not a bad thing to be.  If you&#039;re gonna rip folks off, at least rip the BEST folks off.</description>
