It's a great structure for the parenthetical references and digressions that come up in modern speech -- but in an elegant way that doesn't make it so the speaker loses the plot (as happens so often in those sorts of verbal footnotes). DFW's death was a huge loss. So sad. [1] Which, is, admittedly, not a bad thing to be. If you're gonna rip folks off, at least rip the BEST folks off.
